Wine Tours Madeira

MADEIRA RUM AFTERNOON DELIGHT

Tuesdays and Thursdays
from 01:45 P.m to 5:30 P.m | 85€ per person

Did you know Madeira Island also produces rum? Although the island is best known for its fortified wine, it was not always king of drinks alone — there was rum, too. The main reason for this Rum being unknown is the fact that until a couple years ago it was called by everyone “Aguardente” (translates into Fire water), although we’ve been producing for 500 years. Amazing isn’t it?

Aguardente from Madeira is an agricole style rum made from fresh sugar cane juice rather than molasses. This gives the rum a distinct fresh aroma, intensely grassy and earthy.

Join us for this Madeira Rum Afternoon Delight. If you are a Rum lover, this afternoon delight is made for you. If not, give it a try. It will be an afternoon well spent, and there is a big possibility for you to find your new favorite drink (or cocktail at least!).

Drinking Rum by the sea
Workshop at a Rum Tour in Madeira

Explaining Rum process in Madeira

What you can expect

After all the pick ups we will head to Câmara de Lobos, a fisherman’s village where supposedly poncha (the traditional Madeiran drink which main ingredient is rum) was invented. We will have a workshop where you will learn how to do this little piece of Madeiran bliss. “In Madeira, if you have a cold, a fever, a broken heart… Poncha is the medicine”. After the workshop and Poncha tasting you will have some free time to explore on your own this little village.

Since Madeira Rum is made from the alcoholic fermentation and destillation of sugarcane juice, we will stop to see the sugarcane plantation and taste it like every Madeiran did in their childhood.

Then we will head to Porto da Cruz, where we wil visit a rum producer. Here we will learn about the process of rum making and taste some rums as well as sugarcane cake and cookies.

We will end this afternoon with a Madeiran rum cocktail. The drop-off to your accomodation or hotel is included in Funchal area (other areas upon request). (Please fill in this info in the Special Requirements section or send us a email).

3 in 1 tour. storytelling – discover Funchal – wine and food tasting
This tour offers something for everyone. During the route we stopped at nice venues for tasting traditional drinks and dishes and we got a good impression of the city of Funchal. Take a light breakfast because at the end of the tour you have enjoyed more than a full lunch. I would recommend it to all travelers to Madeira.

Fantastic food & wine tour.
The pace was easy going and we visited places we would otherwise have walked past. We avoided overtly tourist venues & busy main streets too. The beers, wines & foods were all excellent.
Highly recommended tour.
